[작가 노트] 나는 안다. 내가 무엇인지

홀로 방콕에서 보냈던 지난 1996년의 여름날들, 그때의 느낌을 되새겨 본다.
평화롭고 착한 사람들, 그 사람들을 포함하는, 섭리에 따르는 아름다운 자연 그리고 뉴욕 집에 돌아가 필름 묶음에서 오려낸 3점의 사진과 이번 전시에서 처음으로 공개하는 5점의 디지털이미지를 중심으로 이 개인전을 구성해 본다.

위 8점을 만들 당시 나는 아래와 같이 요약해본 생각을 했었다.

나는 안다
나는 어느 디자이너에 의해
이 물질계 위에 뿌려진
자기증식 프로그램이다.
나는 우리를 대표하며 더 큰 우리 속에 속한다.
나는 무의식의 인터넷 속의 컨텐츠와 같이
우주와 공유하는 의식이며
몸조차 유전자의 집합으로 이루어진
수열 즉 개념이다
나는 영상이며 꿈이다.
나는 안다 내가 누군지
갈고 닦아 빛의 바다에 합류할 작디작은
그러나 맑은 물방울이라는 것을

벽에 걸릴 나머지 3점은 1983년부터 1991년까지의 이미지 32점을 데님 위에 직접 프린트한 작업들에서 고른 것이고 1991년부터 1994년 사이에 만들었던 아날로그 비디오 작업들 중 이 전시의 성격에 맞는다고 판단해 선정한 5편을 상영한다.
이 전시가 방콕의 친구들에게 기쁨을 주는 밝은 물방울이 되기를 희망하며 ■


I Do Know What It Is I Am

I think back to the days when I spent some time alone in Bangkok in 1996.
Peaceful and good people
and
nature that flows in divine providence.

Later, when I had come back to New York, I discovered three photographs that I especially like from all of the film I took during the trip.
In this solo exhibition I will show these three photographs and premiere five digital images that came to realization after a long and serious inner journey.

I know,
I am a seed that was spread by a perfect designer,
a self-reproductive program,
that I am us.
We are in a larger us.
My unconscious is shared by the collective human unconscious.
I am a string of numbers, concepts,
genes.
I am an illusion.
I am a dream.
A drop of water
will flow into an ocean
after a long journey.

I have also included eight works which, I believe, have a thematic inter-relationship with the other works in this show: three prints on denim that will be displayed as wall hangings were created between 1983 and 1991, and five analog video works that were created between 1991 and 1994.

I hope this show
may be a drop of water to friends in Bangkok.
