풍경 속의 풍경
나타나고 사라지는 풍경, 여기에서 풍경이란 세계를 구획하고 질서지우는 방식의 풍경화가 아니라 비전체로서의 풍경 속에서 풍경이 되고 또 다른 가능성을 만나는 것이다. 그러한 의미에서 나의 작업은 인위적인 형식이나 의식의 바깥에서 이루어진다. 여기에서 밖이란 내부와 외부가 만나는 장소이며 지시적인 언어의 내부가 열리는 자리이다.

나의 그리기는 고요하게 내려놓는 순간에 발생한다. 소요(逍遙)하는 시간 속에서 무심히 하늘을 바라보는 텅 빈 시선, 판단하지 않는 태도, 너와 내가 서로 다른 것이 아님(不二)을 깨닫는 시간 속에서 경계(境界)는 사라지고 삶의 유한함 속에서 손에 잡을 수 없는 무한한 것과 만나게 하는 과정이다.

회화(繪畵)는 드로잉의 확장된 자리이며 심연의 공간이다. 따라서 드로잉은 회화를, 회화는 드로잉을 서로 대리, 보충한다. 그러한 의미에서 드로잉은 공간을 여는 것이다. 그것은 평면의 공간속에서도 일상의 삶 속에서도 이루어지는 것이며 행위와 과정을 통해 목소리를 발하는 사후적 결과물이다.

무미한 침묵 속에 펼쳐지는 물질과 흔적은 존재의 또 다른 얼굴이다. 정신의 영역을 통과하여 만나게 되는 지지체는 접촉의 촉지적 순간 안에서 정적이면서도 동적인 것이 되어가며, 손에 잡을 수 없는 찰나의 순간은 시간의 명료함을 열고 공기 속에 살아 숨 쉬는 호흡과 감정의 진폭이 되어, 풍경의 몸속에서 흔들린다.

‘화면에 일획을 긋는다’는 것은 또 다른 세상과 만나는 순간이다. 기록될 수 없는 순간을 기록하는 여정이며 시작과 끝의 시간을 넘어선 일획은 평면과의 접촉 속에서, 풍경과의 만남 속에서, 타자를 향한 노출 속에서, 예측할 수 없는 노정 속에서, 목적 없는 삶 속에서, 풍경 속의 풍경이 되어간다.

시선의 불가능성, 그것은 언어가 의미에 닿지 못하고 끊임없이 지연되고 미끄러지는 것처럼 존재의 지평에서 의미로 포획될 수 없는 나머지와 포옹한다. 화면 위에 포치되는 흔적들의 틈, 피어나는 잔여는 지시적인 공간의 억압으로부터 존재의 세계로 확장되는 울림을 이야기한다.

개와 늑대의 시간, 낮과 밤, 하늘과 땅의 경계가 사라지는 미명계(微明界), 무경계(無境界) 연작은 말할 수 없는 것을 말하려는 것이며 불가능한 말하기를 반복해야하는 존재의 숙명을 드러낸다. 의미로부터 벗어난 버려진 사물, 그늘진 자리, 흐리고 시린 날에 바라본 이름 없는 풍경들에 대한 애착(affection)은 편리함이나 속도, 효율성과는 거리가 멀다. 합리적인 생산성과 경쟁 속에서 천천히 흐르고 변화해가는 풍경 속에 풍경을 말하려는 것은 빠르게 달려가지만 정지상태를 벗어나지 못하는 현대인의 불안한 일상에 무미함과 무위의 글쓰기를 제안하는 것이다.


A Landscape in the Landscape

A landscape that appears and disappears. Here, the landscape is not a landscape painting in a way that divides the world and creates order, but the landscape within the landscape becomes a part and meets another possibility. In this sense, my work is done outside of synthetic form or consciousness. Here, the outside is a place where the inside and the outside meet and a space where the inner part of the indicative language opens.

My drawing happens the moment I calmly put it down. It is an empty gaze and unjudgmental attitude of looking at the sky casually while walking about freely, a boundary that disappears in the time when you and I realize that there is nothing different from each other, and a process of meeting the infinite that cannot be grasped in the finiteness of life.

Painting is an expanded realm of drawing and a space of abyss. Therefore, drawing and painting substitute and supplement each other. It is realized even in plane spaces and daily life and is an ex-post result of making voices through actions and processes.

Materials and traces unfolding in meaningless silence are other faces of existence. The support that passes through the realm of the spirit becomes static and dynamic within the tactile moment of contact, and the moment that cannot be held in hand opens the clarity of time. Also, the breathing that lives and breathes in the air becomes an amplitude of emotions and shakes in the body of the landscape.

‘Drawing a stroke on the canvas’ is the moment of encountering another world and the journey of recording moments that cannot be recorded. One stroke transcending the time of the beginning and the end becomes a landscape within the landscape in contact with a plane, in an encounter with the landscape, in exposure to others, in unpredictable journeys, in an aimless life.

The impossibility of gaze, as if it were a metaphor that cannot be expressed in language, embraces the rest that cannot be captured in meaning in the horizon of existence. The cracks of the traces widely spread on the screen, that is, the afterimages that bloom, refer to the resonance that extends from the oppression of the indicative space to the world of existence.

The series Twilight and No Boundaries, in which the boundaries between dog and wolf time, day and night, and sky and earth disappear, to say the unspeakable and reveal the fate of a being who has to repeat the impossible. The affection for abandoned objects devoid of meaning, shady seats, and nameless landscapes viewed on a cloudy and cold day is far from convenience, speed, or efficiency. My work is to speak of the landscape in the landscape that flows slowly and changes amid good productivity and competition. Also, my work is to suggest idle and free writing to the anxious daily life of modern people who run fast but cannot get out of a standstill.
