Press Release

Five artists participating in 《Square》 - Kim In Young, Kim Hyung Gwan, Min Yu jeong, Lee Hyein, Choi Youngbin– use their own figurative language of different styles and techniques, but the square-shaped painterly space is regarded as the basic starting space, and unravel a figurative sense they pursue in and outside the space. This exhibition is based on the motif of ‘square’ symbolizing their common painterly space and conditions, and considers the painterly space as a ‘point of encounter’ for the attitudes of the artists on how they recognize physical materials, figurative techniques and perspectives. The intention is to reveal various aesthetic practices of the artists that visualize senses in life by crisscrossing the square-shaped painterly space.

Kim In Young (b.1983) expresses the senses she has perceived by exploring the painterly environment that has changed in the digital world by using a myriad of techniques and modes. She traces the mechanism of action and properties of a digital screen by shifting the endlessly occurring storage and accumulation mechanism in the digital world onto two-dimensional planes, and trace the mechanism of action and properties of a digital screen or revealing a new dimension of materiality through volume or installation.

Kim Hyung Gwan (b.1970) painted sceneries as if to look up to a rich forest. The scene seems to have been taken out of an entire scenery and trees painted in red seem somewhat unfamiliar and new. The roughly expressed surface of the canvas makes one realize the differences with the existing figurative grammar, which is reminiscent of his act of brush-stroking instead of the straightforward image of trees.

Min Yu Jeong (b.1986) pays attention to the visual environment created by images that overflow through many media, and puts the daily reality into works. As she transfers banal images in the media into small canvases, she implicitly raises a societal question of ‘seeing’, while draws the attention of beholders towards the scene in contrary with a daily life.

Lee Hyein (b.1981) painted the image of rose trees as a part of (2017). The objects in front are almost invisible by being trapped by darkness, and the chill generates limitations in time. The objects in the painting are the light leaking out from where flowers and petals have fallen down, the line of the trees overlapping with the light, oil that reacts to the temperature and the state of following a varying view.

Lastly, Choi Youngbin (b.1984) freely manifests the vibrant senses and images within herself which cannot be verbally explained on canvas through the material of paint and the physical act of painting. Her abstract image represented through the relationship of herself as a painter and the figures on canvas is the relationship between her awareness and body.

As such, the painterly space of flatness could be a space where the sceneries of the world are recorded, the one where the embedded traces of the inner world are lifted up and the one where new figures endlessly appear. Artists reflect their aesthetic goals and identity through long observation, hard thoughts and endless strokes in a confined painterly space. Thus, the images transferred by individual artists into the square space are the outcome of action to reason over the world. The five artists participating in 《Square》 have different objects and ways to draw the objects into their world of art, but the exhibition focuses on the process of transferring non-definitive sense of artists felt in the temporality of life and their reality of some sort into a painterly space. The exhibition will guide the audience to loosely set the relationships of the exhibits in this context, and ensure that each artist could serve as a paragraph of the total text of the exhibition.
