작가노트(Artist Note)

의(衣), 식(食), 주(住)는 인간생활을 위한 필수불가결한 요소로 공유되어왔다. 그 가운데 주(住)는 거주를 위한 장소일 뿐 아니라 안식과 위로를 주는 공간으로서 기능하는 기본적인 요소다. 그럼에도 불구하고 주(住)라는 기본 조건을 채운다는 것은 보통의 노력으로는 불가능해보이기까지 한다. 쉼 없이 팽창하는 도시, 그곳에서 생활해야만 하는 우리에게 ‘집’은 간절히 빌어야만 얻을 수 있는 빌 주(呪)가 아닐까?

도시를 대표하는 주거 풍경인 ‘아파트’는 거주의 목적을 넘어 종종 재산을 나타내기도 하며 신분의 표식이자 계급이 되어버린 듯하다. 어쩌면 가장 흔하면서도 얻는 것이 수월치 않은 ‘아파트’는 살 주(住)가 아닌 간절히 빌어야 얻을 수 있는 빌 주(呪)가 되었다.


이러한 인식을 기반으로 현대인의 빌 주(呪)를 작품으로 구현하는 과정은 재앙을 쫓고 소원을 성취하기 위해 찾는 부적의 제작과정과 동일하게 이루어진다.

Food, Clothing, Shelter and Talisman : The Re-Enchantment of Basic Human Needs.

Food, clothing and shelter have been widelyaccepted as indispensable necessities for human life. Of these three, theshelter isn’t merely a place for residence but a space which provides rest andconsolation. Despite this, acquiring the basic necessity of shelter (ju, 住) [1] in South Korea seems nearlyimpossible with conventional efforts. The city expands incessantly andendlessly, and to us who have no choice but to live in it, isn’t a ‘house’something we must desperately pray for? (ju, 呪)*

‘Apartment’ is the most common type of residencein South Korean cities, but the purpose of apartment is no longer a means forresidence here; it has become a symbol of wealth, a signifier of social classand rank. Although apartments are the most common type of residence in SouthKorea, it is extremely difficult to own one, making ‘apartments’ no longer aform of shelter (ju, 住) but something that could be obtained only by wishing for it (ju, 呪) desperately.

Based on this social awareness, my processof creating the modern citizens’ wish (ju, 呪) is identical with the process ofcreating a traditional Korean talisman (ju, 呪)* whichwas used to expel misfortune and make wishes come true.

[1] ‘Ju’ is the pronunciation for the Chinese character住 which meansshelter. However, the pronunciation for the Chinese character呪, which meansto pray for, is also pronounced as ‘ju’, making ‘ju’ a homonym. In Chinesecharacters, the same character can be used both as noun and verb withoutinflection, and the latter ju, a verb meaning to pray for something, can alsobe used as a noun meaning talisman.
