스위스 포지션 + 스위스 스케일 : 스위스 지속가능한 건축의 아름다움

친환경 건축(eco-friendly architecture)이라는 표현보다 지속가능한 건축(sustainable architecture)이라는 표현을 선호한다는 것은 우리 삶 속에 이성적이고 과학적인 가치 외에도 감성적이고 정신적인 가치가 중요한 부분을 차지한다는 의미일 것이다. 그렇다면 지속가능한 건축은 어떠한 가치를 유지하고자 하는 것인가? 건축가는 그 가치를 어떻게 구현하고 있는가? 그리고 그러한 건축의 아름다움은 어디에서 만들어지는가?
스위스 건축을 이해하기 위해서는 스위스 지형의 강렬함과 그 스케일을 함께 생각한다. 스위스만큼 좁은 지역에 좁은 산이 많은 나라도 없을 텐데, 이러한 지형적 환경은 제약이 되기보다는 중요한 자산이 되었다. 스위스의 대표적인 산들이 오늘날 스위스에서 1 인당 소득이 가장 높고 땅값이 가장 비싼 곳**이라는 사실은 스위스가 산의 가치를 활용하고 있다는 것을 넘어 새로운 가치를 만들어가고 있다는 것을 말해 준다.
이것을 가능하게 한 것은 가파른 산을 멀리 떨어져 있는 대상이 아니라 일상과 가깝게 만든 터널, 다리, 댐과 철도 등의 기반시설의 구축과 우수한 공학 기술 때문일 것이다. 사실 주변 땅과 지형에 대한 관심은 지속가능한 건축을 실행하는 첫단계이다. 그것은 비단 주변 재료를 사용하기 때문에 운반비와 탄소배출량을 줄일 수 있다는 에너지 측면의 관점 뿐만 아니라, 그 지역의 역사와 문화의 연속선상에서 건축을 실현하고자 하는 것을 의미한다. 이러한 땅과 건축 그리고 사람간의 잔잔한 관계 성립이 결국 스위스 건축이 보여주는 지속가능한 건축의 모습이 아닐까 생각해 본다. 이러한 주변과의 연속성과 더불어 스위스 건축이 보여주고 있는 섬세한 재료의 활용은 건축 디테일을 하나의 공예품처럼 다루는 듯 하다. 이러한 면에서 스위스 건축의 지식을 습득하려는 노력보다는 스위스 건축의 잘 만들어진(well crafted) 건축적 가치를 경험하고 느끼는 것이 중요할 것이다.
<스위스 포지션_스위스 스케일> 전시는 지난 20 년간의 스위스 건축을 지속가능이라는 관점에서 재조명하며 다양한 스케일로 보여주고 있는 건축 사진전이다. 이미 여러 국가에서 순회 중인 <스위스 포지션: 건축물에 대한 33 가지 지속가능한 접근>사진전은 스위스 건축을 알파인 Apline, 전원 Rural, 도시 Urban, 교외 Suburban, 사회기반시설 Infrastructural, 그리고 레크리에이셔널 Recreational 이라는 6 개의 테마로 구성하여 지속가능한 건축에 대해 다양한 각도에서 질문을 던지고 있다. 한국에서 열리는 이번 <스위스 포지션+스위스 스케일>전시에서는 기존 <스위스 포지션> 전시와 함께 지속가능한 건축의 건축적 아름다움에 집중하고자 <스위스 스케일>이라는 주제를 더하였다. 전시는 스위스에 대한 개괄적인 이해에서 시작하여 세부적인 건축에서 재료의 활용 그리고 지속가능한 건축의 미래상을 엿볼 수 있도록 꾸려져있다. 먼저 <스위스 맵 Swiss Maps>을 통해 스위스의 지리 및 통계 지도를 한국과 비교하고 있고 <스위스 포지션>에서 던지고 있는 6 개의 질문을 통해 지속가능한 건축을 다양한 차원에서 생각하며 스위스 건축을 통해 그 해답을 만들어가보고자 한다. 기존 <스위스 포지션>의 작품 중 6 개를 선정하여 재료, 공간, 형태 그리고 지역이라는 다방면의 각도로 건축적인 가치를 느끼고자 하며 <스위스 머테리얼 Swiss Materials>에서는 스위스 건축의 재료 활용에 대해 여러 작품을 비교하며 느낄 수 있는 자리를 마련하였다. 또한, 미래의 지속가능한 건축을 엿볼 수 있는 스위스 취리히 공과대학 싱가포르 연구소 (ETH Singapore, FCL)의 건축 연구를 함께 전시하였으며 이번 전시 기간동안 연세대학교 건축공학과와 취리히 공과대학 싱가포르 연구소 간의 학문적 교류가 이어질 계획이다.

Swiss Positions + Swiss Scales
- the Beauty of Sustainable Architectures in Switzerland

Growing preference for the use of the term “sustainable architecture” over “eco-friendly architecture” seems to suggest greater significance and admiration toward values governing our everyday lives that are not only rational and scientific but also emotional and spiritual. Then what are the values sustainable architecture aims to protect and preserve? How are those values being pursued by architects? And how does sustainable architecture deliver its beauty?
The understanding and appreciation of Swiss architecture must be accompanied by careful consideration of the intensity and scale of the landscape of Switzerland. The unique characteristics of the Swiss geography of being a small country with one of the world’s most mountainous regions have served an important asset to the legacy of Swiss architecture rather than being an obstruction to its development. Some of the representative mountains of Switzerland are now home to regions that boast the highest per capita income and property value*2, which is a clear indication that the people of Switzerland are adapt at not only utilizing the potent values of the mountains but also creating additional values. And these seem to be made possible by the development of social infrastructure such as tunnels, bridges, dams and railways as well as advancement of engineering technology that brought towering mountains closer within the reach of daily life.
The understanding of and attention to surrounding landscape and context is the very first step of executing sustainable architecture. Aside from its objective of sustaining energy by opting for locally-sourced material and reducing carbon footprint associated with transportation, sustainable architecture also means to appreciate and sustain history and culture of the region through architecture. The gentle interaction between land, architecture and people evident in Swiss architecture seem to illustrate well the quality of sustainable architecture of Switzerland. Together with this continuity of the surroundings, meticulous use of material demonstrated by Swiss architecture shows how Swiss architects handle architectural details as a work of craft. In this sense, rather than trying to acquire knowledge of Swiss architecture, the effort of experiencing the spatial values created by well-crafted architecture could be more beneficial when attempting to appreciate sustainable architecture of Switzerland.
is an exhibition that showcases photographs of Swiss architecture of the past 20 years from a perspective of sustainability in various scales. Previously presented in a number of countries, exhibition presents Swiss architecture under 6 separate themes of Alpine, Rural, Urban, Suburban, Infrastructure and Recreational and poses questions on sustainable architecture from diverse perspectives. Exhibition is now presented in Korea by introducing the topic of in addition to previously presented exhibition to place emphasis on the architectural beauty in respect to sustainable architecture.
This exhibition will encompass general understanding of Swiss, take a closer examination of use of material in architecture and envision the future possibility of sustainable architecture. is a feature of the exhibition that compares geographical and statistical maps of Switzerland and Korea. 6 questions posed by the welcome attempts to seek answers to sustainable architecture by exploring the Swiss architecture. From works presented in the , 6 are selected for their representation of architectural values in diverse perspectives such as material, space, form and locality.
is another feature of the exhibition where the use of material by Swiss architecture can be explored by comparing different works of architecture.
Research by the Future Cities Laboratory(FCL) of Singapore-ETH Centre(SEC) is also presented in this exhibition to showcase sustainable architecture of the future, and academic collaboration between the Singapore-ETH Centre and Yonsei University’s Department of Architectural Engineering are also scheduled during the duration of exhibition.
