챕터투는 제 5기 레지던시 입주작가전인 『명명되어서는 안되는(Better Not to be Named)』을 1월 20일부터 2월 26일까지 연남동 전시 공간에서 개최한다. 강철규, 이의성, 정희승 3인이 참여하는 이번 전시는 회화(강철규), 설치(이의성), 사진(정희승) 등 서로 다른 영역에서 활동하며 감정, 관계, 분위기 등 미묘하고 비가시적인 세계의 시각화를 모색하여 왔던 각자의 작품 세계를 조망하고, 앞으로의 행보를 가늠해 보고자 함에 있다. 파스칼 키냐르(Pascal Quignard, b.1948)는 "우리의 언어는 입안에서 단단히 자리 잡고 있다가 나오는 게 아니라, 혀끝에서 맴도는 것이, 도무지 찾아지지 않는 것이 찾아져 입술 위에서 겨우 나오는 것"이라고 말한다. '체계(Structure)'는 특정 분야가 발전시켜온 객관화의 산물이라고도 설명할 수 있는데, 언어에 있어서는 상호 규약에 따라 생겨난 단어의 조합으로 의사소통하는 것을 의미한다. 이러한 상호 연계성의 중시는 개개인의 주관적인 감정과 감각의 공통분모를 찾고 단순화 방향으로 발전해 왔고, 키냐르의 말은 표현 수단으로써의 언어는 우리의 충실한 대변자가 아닌 태생적인 한계를 가진 불완전한 기호에 불과하다고도 해석될 수 있다. '뉘앙스'란 단어가 예술 및 문학의 비평 영역에서 광범위하고 빈번하게 사용되는 이유가 여기에 있다. 표현상의 미세한 차이가 존재함을 받아들임으로써 서사의 단조로움을 피하고 원작자의 의도를 보다 존중할 수 있기 때문이다. 미술 작품에 있어서 '무제(Untitled)'가 보편화된 과정의 이면에는 특정한 제목이 작품 전체의 기조와 분위기를 왜곡하고 한정 지을 수 있다는 공통된 두려움에 기인하기도 한다. 공교롭게도 세 작가 모두 작품의 의도에 보다 가까이 다가가고 창작에 간여한 고유한 감정선을 파악하기 위해서는 즉각적이고 확실한 감상에 대한 기대를 저버려야 한다. 명확한 서사와 인과관계가 아닌 각자의 미묘한 감정과 독특한 상상력에서 출발한 작품들은 한 단어로 명명될 수 없는 풍부한 해석과 유추를 불러오며, 챕터투 레지던시에서 도모할 또 다른 '무제'의 잉태를 우리에게 기대하도록 하는 계기가 될 것이다.

강철규(b.1990)는 한남대학교에서 회화를 전공하고 동대학원에서 미술학 석사학위를 받았다. 이응노미술관 신수장고(2021), 대전테미예술창작센터(2020), 갤러리가비(2018), 갤러리고트빈(2017) 등에서 개인전을 개최하였고, 갤러리바톤(2022), 대전시립미술관 기획전 『상실, 나에게 일어난 모든 일』(2021)과 카라스갤러리(2020), DMA아트센터(2018), 갤러리가비(2017) 등에서 열린 그룹전에 참여했다.

이의성(b.1982)은 인하대학교 미술교육학과를 졸업하고 영국 글래스고 예술학교(The Glasgow School of Art)에서 순수미술학 석사학위를 수여했다. 프로젝트 스페이스 사루비아(2019), 인사미술공간(2017)에서 개인전을 열었고, 갤러리바톤(2022), 쇼앤텔(2021), 전북도립미술관(2020), 우민아트센터(2019), 송은아트스페이스(2018) 등에서 개최된 그룹전에 참여했으며, 제18회 송은미술대상 우수상을 수상했다.

정희승(b.1974)은 홍익대학교 회화과 졸업 이후, 영국의 런던 커뮤니케이션 대학(London Colleage of Communication)과 동대학원에서 사진과 석사학위를 받았다. 신도문화공간(2020), 고은사진미술관(2017), 페리지갤러리(2016), PKM갤러리(2014) 등에서 개인전을 개최하였고, 국립현대미술관(2020, 2014), 하이트컬렉션(2019), 챕터투(2019, 2018), 광주비엔날레(2018) 등에서 열린 그룹전에 참여했다. 2020년에는 국립현대미술관 올해의 작가상 후보로 선정된 바 있다. ■ 챕터투



Chapter II is pleased to announce, Better Not to be Named, a group exhibition of works by the 5th resident artists from 20th January to 26th February in Yeonnam-dong, Seoul. The exhibition features artistic achievements in different media of three artists—Kang Cheol Gyu (Painting), Lee Ue Sung (Installation) and Chung Hee Seung (Photography)—who have sought to visualize ineffable and intangible occurrences such as emotion, relation or atmosphere and it also provides an opportunity to estimate their future directions.

Pascal Quignard (b.1948) insisted that words are not something already formed as sound inside a mouth but they are spoken in search of language—the absent, that remains absent on the tip of the tongue. A 'structure' in any field can be explained as an outcome established by objectification; in terms of language, it indicates the course of communication relying on the combinations of words that adhere to mutual agreements between individuals. The emphasis on this interrelation has developed into simplifying the denominators found in subjective emotions and sensorial experiences of each individual. In this context, what Pascal Quignard attempted to articulate is that language as a means of expression is a mere symbol imperfect with inherent limitations rather than our credible spokesman. It is why we can often encounter the term, 'nuance', in the realm of criticism of art and literature. By accepting the subtle differences in expressions, it is possible to avoid monotonous aspects of blunt narratives and respect the intention of creators more. When it comes to naming an artwork, 'Untitled' is general as there is certain apprehension that specific titles might distort or limit the overall theme and ambience of works.

Intriguingly, in order to grasp the artists' authentic sensibility influencing the creating process and approach towards the original intention of the three artists' practice, it is necessary to give up on an expectation for instant and obvious appreciation. The works triggered by delicate sensitivity and unique imagination instead of clear storylines or causal logics consequently draw a variety of interpretations and inferences which cannot be defined as a single word; moreover, they encourage the viewers to look forwards to another 'Untitled' which will emerge in the Chapter II Residency program.

Kang Cheol Gyu (b.1990) graduated with a BFA in Painting and an MFA in Fine Art from Hannam University. He has exhibited solo presentations at Leeungno Museum M2 (2021), Artist Residency TEMI (2020), Gallery Gabi (2018) and Gallery Goat Bean (2017). He attended group exhibitions at Gallery Baton (2022), Kara's Gallery (2020), DMA Art Center (2018), Gallery Gabi (2017) and recently an exhibition, Loss, Everything That Happened to Me at Daejeon Museum of Art (2021).

Lee Ue Sung (b.1982) received a BFA in Fine Art Education from Inha University and an MFA in Fine Art from the Glasgow School of Art. He held his solo exhibitions at Project Space Sarubia (2019) and Insa Art Space (2017). He attended group exhibitions at multiple establishments including Gallery Baton (2022), Show and Tell (2021), Jeonbuk Museum of Art (2020), Woomin Art Center (2019) and SongEun Art Space (2018) and won the Excellent Prize of the 18th SongEun Art Award.

Chung Hee Seung (b.1974) received a BA in Painting from Hongik University and an MA in Photography from London College of Communication. Her solo exhibitions at numerous establishments include Sindoh Art Space (2020), GoEun Museum of Photography (2017), Perigee Gallery (2016) and PKM Gallery (2014). She has participated in multiple art presentations at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Korea (2020, 2014), HITE Collection (2019), Chapter II (2019, 2018) and the 12th Gwangju Biennale. In 2020, she was selected as one of the nominees of the Korea Artist Prize.
