내면의 기억
「내면의 기억」 연작은 어떠한 사실들이 역사적으로 기록될 만큼 중요한 장소들을 대상으로 관찰하고, 세월의 흐름에 따라 변화되는 사람들의 인식(정치적, 문화적, 역사적)에 대해 다의적인(polysemous) 의미로 사유하고 표현한 작업이다. 과거로부터 많은 시대적 변화가 일어난 역사적 장소 그리고 지금도 기능을 하거나, 본래의 실질적 의미가 변하여 2차적 의미로 존재하는 장소를 바라보며 '역사적인 장소가 가지는 의미는 어떻게 기억이 될까?' 라는 물음이 본 작업의 계기가 되었다. 「내면의 기억」 연작은 흐릿한 이미지로 설치(installation) 후 촬영하여 의미를 정확히 드러내지 않으면서 모호하고 불명확한 장소로 만들었다. 중성적인 표현 방식을 통해 사실적인 장소를 다양한 의미로 표현하고, 기억에 대한 기능과 역할이 또 다른 해석으로 창출되기를 바라는 작업이다.

도래할 꿈 - A Dream to Return
「도래할 꿈」은 과거에 기억된 어떤 사실이 세월의 흐름과 함께 불안전한 이미지의 상태로 남아있는 것을 표현한 사진 작업이다. 어린 시절의 놀이터를 꿈에서 본 이후 인간이 갖고 있는 '기억'에 대하여 사유하게 되었다. 어린 시절에 신체적, 정신적으로 경험했던 일들의 기억이 현재 '나'라는 정체성으로 정립된 것이다. 그러나 과거에 경험한 행복, 슬픔, 사랑, 분노 등의 감정은 시간의 흐름에 의해 점점 흐릿해지며 잊혀간다. 이런 경험으로 '머리에 떠오르는 과거의 이미지들은 원래의 기억에서 왜곡되지 않은 것일까?' 하는 물음이 본 작업의 계기가 된 것이다.
2015년 봄부터 유년기에 뛰어놀았던 장소들을 찾아다니며 촬영을 하였다. 카메라 파사계의 심도를 깊게 설정하고, 렌즈 앞에 투명한 유리를 설치한 후 자연스러운 상태로 물을 흘러내려 시각적으로 왜곡을 시켰다. 지금은 사라지거나 변해버린 장소, 과거 사실과 지금의 실재와는 다름을 왜곡된 이미지로 형상화하였다. 흐릿해지는 이미지는 과거의 장소가 기억과 현실로 혼합되어 필자가 의도했던 구성을 표현하기에 적합하였다. ■ 박경태


Memories that Lie Within
「Memories that Lie Within」 Series are photography works which observed places of facts that are significant enough to even be recorded in history, reasoned about and expressed people's perceptions (political, cultural and historical) which change over the passage of time in a polysemous manner. While staring at historical places where many epochal changes occurred from the past, places which still maintain their historical function or places whose original, genuine significance changed to have secondary meanings, a question 'how is the significance historical places hold remembered?' came to my mind. 「Memories that Lie Within」 Series created ambiguous and obscure places by filming blurry images so that their meanings are not directly or clearly revealed. They are photography works which aspire to encourage the generation of different interpretations by expressing places of facts with a variety of different meanings in a neutral manner.

A Dream to Return
「A Dream to Return」 is a series of photographic works of remembered facts of the past remaining as unstable images along with the passage of time. After seeing my childhood playground in my dreams, I started to think about the memories people have. Emotions experienced in the past such as happiness, sadness, love, and hate fade away and become forgotten as time goes by. Such experience led me to face a question 'could the images of the past occurring in our minds be distorted from our original memories?', which served as the inspiration for this work.
Since the spring of 2015, I started to visit and take pictures of places where I used to play in my childhood. By accurately focusing the camera, installing a transparent glass in front of the lens and making water flows on it naturally, I created a visual distortion. The memories we have define the identities of ourselves today. And They are built on the physical and psychological experiences in us from our early childhoods. The blurry images were adequate for expressing the composition I intended as they mixed places of the past with memories and reality. ■ PARKKYOUNGTAE
