Wind of Tree_ 지난한 노동의 끝에 부는 산들한 나무바람
장희진작가는 오랜 시간에 걸친 노동의 결과로서 작품을 완성하며, 관객으로 하여금 저절로 탄성을 불러일으키게 한다. 작가의 노동 집약적 작업은 화면에서 일종의 시각적인 틈을 생성한다. 이 틈은 공간을 확장하게 하는 역할을 한다. 그림의 크기가 작을 때도 결에서 확장시키는 이미지 때문에 크게 확장되어 보인다. 그것은 차이 (difference)와 반복(repetition)을 통한 과정에서 드러나는데, 이 두 가지는 마치 자전거의 앞 바퀴와 뒷 바퀴처럼 서로가 긴밀하고, 조화롭게 관계성을 가진다. 이러한 과정을 통해서 만들어진 '사이 공간'은 존재하는 것과 존재 하지 않는 것 사이의 틈에 숨어 있는 공간인 것이다.

장희진의 작품에서 차이가 유발시키는 효과는 어떤 것이 있는지 살펴보자. 첫 번째, 곡선과 직선으로 이루어진 화면구성은 선(線)의 속성이 가지고 있는 대립적인 특징을 드러낸다. 두 번째, 나무의 실루엣을 그린 이미지가 화면의 표면과 서로 결합하여 서로를 공간적으로 이어주는 효과를 노린다. 세 번째, 색채의 사용은 '형상색' 과 ' 배경색' 두 가지만 사용하는데, 색채의 상반된 효과는, 형상과 배경에 대한관계를 모호하게 만든다. 네 번째, 캔버스 화면의 시각적인 표현 방법으로 요철(凹凸)화면을 이용하고, 일정한 간격과 직선을 사용한다. 표면이 들어가고 나온 효과는 다른 의미로서의 사이공간을 생성한다. 작가의 그림에서 드러나는 사이공간은 순간적으로 동양화의 여백을 떠올리게 하며, 또 한편으로 정신세계는 서양의 유희적인 정신과 등가관계에서 전개된다. 우리는 그녀의 작품을 통해서 유희적인 기호체계를 바탕으로 다양한 조형적 이미지를 경험하게 된다.

장희진 작가는 이번 전시에서 공간이라는 화면의 구조에 대한 관심으로부터 나무와 바람이라는 자연의 본질적인 요소들에 조금 더 가까이 다가선다. 이러한 시도는 나무의 보다 진솔한 형태들이 화면전체에 너울거리는 웨이브와 만나 마치 숲속과 잔가지들에 이는 싱그런 바람을 연상하게 하는 「Wind of Trees」라는 새로운 시리즈로 준비되었다. "예전에는 이미지의 인상적인 부분을 찾아 그렸기 때문에 화면의 전체적인 공간감에 주목하였다면, 이번에는 나무의 가장 자연스러운 실루엣을 포착하고 화면의 웨이브와 오버랩시킴으로서 숲에 부는 산들한 바람과 같이 실제의 자연과 같은 분위기를 내고 싶었다." 라고 담담하게 말하는 작가는 이번전시에서 가장 치열하고 독창적이며 또한 가장 자연스러운 예술가의 시선을 관객에게 선보이게 될 것이다. 작가 장희진이 앞으로 또 어떤 시선으로 사이 공간을 창조해 낼지 궁금해진다. Tree Winds–Gentle breezes blowing from trees
Artist Jang Hee-jin's work, from her strenuous labor, makes viewers exclaim their admiration. Her labor-intensive work generates a sort of visual chasm on canvas. This chasm assumes the role of extending space. Even a small-scale work looks large due to the texture of the expanding image. This is achieved through a process of difference and repetition, elements which are close, and harmoniously associated with each other, like the relation between a bicycle's front and back wheel. Gaps generated through this process are spaces between presence and absence.

Let's examine the effects difference brings to Jang's work. First, the composition of her work, made of curves and straight lines, reveals each line's contrasting features. Second, the silhouettes of tree images are combined with the surface, linking to each other, spatially. Third, two colors applied to the form and background evoke a contrast effect, making their relations appear ambiguous. Fourth, a concave and convex surface makes the canvas stand out visually, and straight lines in regular spaces are used. The inter-space of her work is reminiscent of blank space in Oriental painting, and its spiritual world unfolds in correspondence to the West's playful spirit. We may experience diverse formative images in her work through joyful sign systems.

Jang comes close to nature's fundamental elements, like trees and wind, through this exhibition. In the Tree Winds series, tree forms meet waves undulating over the canvas, recalling fresh breezes blowing among tree twigs. "In the past I considered a sense of space, capturing the impressive parts of images. This time, I want to evoke a natural atmosphere we feel in gentle breezes blowing from a forest by capturing natural silhouettes of a tree and overlapping them with waves" Jang said. (Jang is expected to showcase most pierce, ingenuous, and natural aspects of her work to viewers in this exhibition. I wonder which inter-space she will create in the future.) ■ KIM SEOKWEON
