페드로 코스타와 후이 샤페즈는 1980년대부터 각각 영화와 미술의 영역에서 활동하며 세계적인 명성을 누려 온 포르투갈의 대표적인 예술가다. 2005년부터는 듀오를 이뤄 포르투갈 세할베스 미술관(Serralves Museum of Art), 2012년 일본 하라미술관(Hara Museum) 등 세계 유수의 미술관에서 전시하며, 두 작가가 지향하는 세계를 중첩하는 시도를 계속해 왔다.

2000년대부터 전통 영화의 경계를 허물고 미술과 교류를 시도해 온 페드로 코스타는 영화 문법 이전의 영상 자체가 품은 가능성을 탐구해왔다. 그는 자신의 영화에서 추출한 영상 푸티지를 전시장에서 나눠 상영하는데, 그 과정에서 원본 영화의 문법은 해체되고 자연스럽게 재조합된 새로운 영상의 정념이 등장하게 된다. 이렇게 표면이 담고 있는 근원을 탐색하고자 하는 방법은 후이 샤페즈의 입체/조각에서도 마찬가지인데, 페드로 코스타의 영상을 조명 삼아 전시장이라는 특정 공간에 그림자를 드리우면서, 작품을 둘러싸고 있는 공간과 영상과의 균형을 통해 쉬이 특정되지 않는 분위기를 드러내는 데 몰두한다.

그러므로 ‹멀리 있는 방›은 조각과 영상 이면의 관념이 공진하는 공간이다. 단일한 형태를 가진 독립적인 작품이지만, 곧 알아볼 수 없을 정도로 뒤섞이며 어두운 방으로 빨려 들어간다. 그리고 방 전체의 대기를 진동시켜 차곡차곡 쌓여 있는 기억과 시간을 비물질적인 관념으로 전환한다. 바로 그 순간, 보이지 않는 에너지로 치환된 두 거장의 세계는 관객의 개인적인 심상과 일일이 맞닥뜨리게 되는 것이다.

본 전시 외에도 한국영상자료원에서는 페드로 코스타 회고전 ‹그림자들의 함성›이 열리며, 아티스트 토크가 6월 25일 오후 2시 일민미술관 강연실에서 진행된다. 또한 전시 기간 중 특별 강연 및 페드로 코스타 특집으로 꾸며진 영화잡지 «오큘로» 2호의 발간 행사가 열린다.

PEDRO COSTA and RUI CHAFES have each worked in film and art since the 1980s and earned worldwide fame as the representative artists of Portugal. Since 2005, COSTA and CHAFES have exhibited as a duo in prominent museums around the world, including the Serralves Museum of Art in Portugal and the Hara Museum in Japan, continuously experimenting an overlap of the two worlds that each aim at.

Seeking a deconstruction of boundary with classic film and interacting with art since the 2000s, PEDRO COSTA has investigated the potential of video that precedes the grammar of film. He divides the video footages he has extracted from his film when screening them inside an exhibition space. It is through this process that the grammar of the original film is deconstructed and the sentiment of a new naturally reassembled video makes its appearance. Such methodology of exploring the root of the plane is also in play in the three-dimensions/sculptures of RUI CHAFES. Using COSTA’s video as lighting and casting shadows upon the specific space of an exhibition space, the works of CHAFES realize a balance with the surrounding space and video, and concentrate on drawing out an ambience that is not easily specified.

Thus, DISTANT ROOMS is a space where abstract ideas beyond the sculpture and video resonate. While the black masses veiled by darkness and the moving images witnessed in between them are independent artworks of each singular form, they are soon jumbled together beyond recognition and absorbed into the dark rooms. They then vibrate the overall air of the rooms, transforming the piles of memory and time into immaterial senses. It is at that very moment the world of the two artists, transduced into invisible energy, finally meets each private sentiment of the audience.

Coinciding with this exhibition is the PEDRO COSTA retrospective by the Korean Film Archive, THE ELOQUENCE OF SHADOWS. There is also to be an artist talk at the ILMIN MUSEUM OF ART Lecture Room at 2pm on June 25th. Further following are special lectures and an event to commemorate the publication of the film magazine OKULO’s second issue that features PEDRO COSTA.
