[작가 노트] 즐거운 그림 그리기

페인팅은 내게 있어서 언제나 최고의 도락이다. (어머니와 돌아가신 할머니의 증언에 의하면) 생후 8개월부터 시작한 나의 그림 그리기에 있어서 산고의 고통 따위는 없었다. 단지, 특별함이 있었다면 그림을 그릴 때 마다 스스로의 천재성에 감동했었다는 것 밖에는…….

하지만 미술대학의 입학을 전후로 90년대 말까지, 그림 그리기는 언제나 나 자신만을 위한 것이었다.

1970년대 말에서 1980년대에 이르는 시기에 내가 강요받았던 것은 즐거운 그림 그리기 대신 발명가나 기획자로서 새로운 미술의 장을 여는 것이었다. 한편으로 디지털 매체에 매료된 내게 새 시대도 과히 나쁘진 않았고 새로운 생각과 새로운 매체를 통한 나의 행진이 시작되었다.

그림 그리기는 계속 되었지만 내 전시의 주인공은 아이러니하게도 언제나 개념과 비디오 스크린, 디지털 프린트 미디어 등이었을 뿐 내 그림은 세상에 보여 지기 위한 것은 아니었다. 단지 그림 그리기는 내게 유일한 운동이었으며 즐겁고도, 이제는, 은밀하기까지 한 어떤 것일 뿐이었다.

1993년 5월, 뉴욕으로 이주한 이후 나는 cart board에 즐겨 그림을 그리곤 했다.
cart board는 쉽게 구할 수 있는데다가 붓질할 때의 느낌이 좋고 물감이 깊게 베어 들어 즐거운 그림 그리기엔 더 할 나위 없었다. 일필휘지, 전통적인 한국화의 한 방법처럼 한 달음에 무언가를 그려냈을 때 얻어지는 결과는 더욱 나를 만족스럽게 했었다.


1999년 뉴욕의 Tompkins Square Gallery의 개인전에 처음으로 나의 그림들이 등장했다. 작가로 활동한지 15여년 만에, 한국 나이로 40살에, 처음으로 그림들은 내 전시의 주인공이 되었고 그때의 감격은 지금도 잊을 수 없다. 하지만, 이때도 내 cart board 그림들은 여러 이유로 어두움 속에 있어야했다.
그 해, cart board 그림들은 모두 사라졌다.
어쩌면 누군가가 너무 사랑했는지도 모르겠고 어쩌면 쓰레기로 취급되었을 지도 모르겠다. 지금 남아있는 십여 점의 사진만이 유일한 기록이다.

이 전시는 한 편으로 그때 사라진 특히 여덟 점의 일련의 1994년 작품에 진 빚을 갚는 일일 지도 모르겠다.

최근 이년간 직장으로 인해 건국대학교가 소재한 충주와 뉴욕을 오가며 생활하는 내가 느끼는 두 도시의 같거나 다른 삶의 모습들을 그려 보고자 한 이번 개인전에 cart board box는 아주 적절한 재료가 되었다. 16층 아파트의 계단을 오르내리며 수집한 중고 cart board box들은 원래 전자제품이거나 책, 식품류나 의류 또는 식기 등을 담고 있었을 것이며 누군가의 이삿짐을 나르는데 동원되었을 지도 모르겠다.

전시는 한 달 동안 진행되나 처음 이주간은 내가 전시장에 중고 종이 박스를 설치하거나 그 위에 공개적으로 그림 그리는 모습을 보게 될 것이다. 오늘도 즐거운 그림그리기를 기대하며……. ■


[평론] JINSIK SHIN'S NEW PAINTINGS 'NEIGHBORS'

Since the beginning of Shin's artistic and professional career, he has focused on computer technology as a medium of artistic expression. His solo show "Computer Art Performance" at the French Cultural Center in 1985 was the first exhibition in Korea to feature works in this medium. Shin's works have been represented internationally at the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Gwachoen, Korea, the Art Museum in Seoul Arts Center, Seoul, the Kumho Museum of Arts, Akita Prefectural University, Akita, Japan, Asia Art and Science, Shanghai, China, Bangkok CODE, Bangkok, Thailand, Center for the Arts, Hong Kong and Berlin, Germany and Tompkins Square Gallery, New York. In 1992, Shin planned, produced, and curated the highly successful "Science+Art Show" exposition, commissioned by the Korea Science Foundation and the "Seoul Computer Art Festival," commissioned by EXPO and the Korean Broadcasting System.

Chang Young Im, one of the pioneers in computer art currently teaching at KAIST, Industrial Design Department, called attention to Shin's role in early media art in Korea and wrote, "The first computer art exhibition was held by Jin Sik Shin, and following his lead, all sorts of performances were held so that we could appreciate this new art direction."(Korean Computer Graphics Almanac, Design News, 1992)

Hong Hee Kim, art critic and curator of 2006 Gwangju Biennale and SeOUL NYymAX 1994, wrote, "Since 1985, Jin Sik Shin has contributed greatly to Korean Computer art even before he moved to New York. Extensively involved in computer art, mixed media installation, video art, interactive media, and performance as well as theory, Shin is a 'whole artist.' " (High Tech Art in Korea, 1994).

Shin moved to New York in 1993 and as an extension of his art he founded Mantra TV, which has broadcast on MNN (Manhattan Neighborhood Network) since 1998. Among his numerous accomplishments, Shin won the MNN Award in 2000 as Best Producer of the Year for the TV programs he produced in New York to promote public interest in art and music.

Shin has continued to experiment with various media, including painting performance, which integrates the conventional concepts of painting and participation. In 2007 Shin was invited to Bangkok CODE by KMUTT (King Mongkut's University of Thonburi)

Currently Jinsik Shin is a Full Time Lecturer and Instructor at the College of Art and Design, Konkuk University, Chungju, Korea. ■
