시간 속에서 셔터가 눌리고 시간을 벗어난 순간은 공간에 담긴다. 사진은 시간을 대할 수 있는 것-對象으로 만든다. 빛이 평면에 얹히는 순간은 작가의 손을 벗어나 있다. 그 아주 짧은 순간에 작가가 할 수 있는 것은 없다. 지극히 짧은 순간이지만 그것이 평면에 얹히기 직전까지 그것은 아직 시간이기 때문이다. 평면에 얹히는 순간 그것은 더 이상 시간이 아닌 공간이 되고 그것은 작가가 그것에 대해 무언가를 할 수 있는 것이 된다. 그래서 라뇨Lagneau는 “공간은 나의 능력의 형식이며 시간은 나의 무력함의 형식”이라고 말한다.

바람
이효연의 작업은 한 때는 나 자신이었던 시간을 대하는 것에서 시작한다. 그것은 나를 벗어나 내 앞에 던져진 시간을 바라보는 것이다. 그것은 나의 안에서 나의 현재였던 시간을 응시하는 것이다. 그것은 이제는 나의 밖에서 나의 과거가 되어버린 시간을 회상하는 것이다. 그래서 그림을 그리는 행위는 과거의 기억을 미래에 기대어 현재에 고쳐 그리는 것이 된다. “물 속을 날고 싶어서 오른쪽 날개를 왼손으로 여러 번 고쳐 그리고 있다.” (Rainy Stockholm 2006_작가노트)

여행
이효연의 작업은 잃어버린 시간을 찾아가는 여행이다. 그것은 오래된 현재의 잊혀진 감정을 찾아가는 여정이다. 그것은 시간 밖에서 기억과 더불어 오래된 현재 속으로 들어가려는 시도이다. 그것은 오래된 감정을 현재에서 살리려는 것이다. 그 여행은 때로는 이루어지기도 하고 때로는 그 시간의 문턱에서 서성거리다 마는 데 그치기도 한다.

<한 번도 살아보지 않은 하루>는 1994년의 홍대 앞 거리를 그린 것이다. 작가는 그 시간을 사진첩에서 우연히 발견했다고 한다. 분명히 익숙한 공간인데 너무도 낯설게 느껴져 그리게 되었다고 한다. 잃어버린 시간을 찾아가는 여행이 시작된 것이다. 시간 속에서 사진을 바라보며, 시간 밖에서 기억을 뒤져보지만 그 시간 속으로 들어가려던 시도는 끝내 이루어지지 못한 것으로 보인다. 그래서 작가는 그림 속에 자기를 대신해서 그 시간과 그 공간을 현재로서 살아갈 인물을 그려 넣는 것으로 아쉬움을 달랜다.

Venice는 2004년 베니스의 어느 골목에서 우연히 올려다 본 하늘을 그린 것이다. 그림의 모델이 된 사진은 5년이라는 시간적 간격에도 불구하고 작가를 단번에 그 시간으로 데려가는데 성공한 듯 보인다. 다만, 그 시간은 평면에서 평면으로 이동하는 과정에 미래에 의해 변형된다. 쪽빛 하늘이 더 잘 보이기를 원하는 바람이 사진에서 전깃줄을 지운 것이다.

이효연 작가에게 그림을 그린다는 것은 한 때 그것이 자기 자신이었던 시간을 찾아 떠나는 여행과 같다. 하지만 그것은 과거를 향한 것이 아니다. 오히려 그것은 미래를 향한 것이다. 왜냐하면 잃어버린 시간을 찾아 떠나는 여행은 한 때 나의 현재였던 과거에 의해 시작되지만 그 여행을 지속시키는 힘은 아직 오지 않은 미래에서 오기 때문이다.

Photograph
In time the shutter is pushed and the moment out of time is put in space. A photograph makes time a thing to face-an object. The moment when light is placed on the surface is out of the artist’s hand. In the moment there is nothing the artist can do. It is so because it is still time until it is placed on the surface how short it is. The moment it is placed on the surface, it is no longer time but space and it becomes an object or a problem about which the artist can do something. So Lagneau said that “Space is form of ability but time is the form of disability.”

Hope
Hyo-Youn Lee’s work begins with facing time which was once her in the past. It is to see time getting out of her and thrown in front of her. It is to gaze time which was once the present in her. It is to recall time which has now become the past out of her. So to paint becomes to repaint memories from the past, in the present, depending on the future. “With hope to fly in the water, I am repainting the right wing with my left hand several times.”(Rainy Stockholm 2006_Artist note 2009)

Travel
Her work is a travel in search of lost time. It is a journey in search of lost feelings from the old present. It is a trial to get into the old present with memories out of time. It is to bring the old feelings to life in the present. Sometimes it is successfully made but sometimes it ends up being around the threshold of the time.

shows a street around Hong-ik University in 1994. It is said that the artist happened to find the time in an old photo album. The travel has begun. While in time looking at the photograph, out of time looking for memories, the trial to get into the time seems to have been unsuccessful. So she created a character that will live in the old present for her.

shows the skies that she happened to look up in an alley in Venice in 2004. It seems that the photograph, the model of the picture, takes her to the time at once despite the time gap of 5years. But the time is transformed by the future while it is moved from the surface to another. The artist’s hope of the blue skies being clearly stood out erased the electrical wires from the photograph.
To the artist painting is a travel searching for the lost time which was once her. But it is not for the past. Rather, it is for the future. It is so because the travel begins with the past which was once her present but the power sustaining the travel comes from the future.
