강릉시립미술관 솔올 특별전시
화가 김종학
강릉시립미술관 솔올은 한국 현대미술사에서 독자적인 조형 언어를 구축해 온 김종학의 작품 세계를 조명하는 특별전 《화가 김종학》을 개최합니다. 이번 전시는 그동안 대중에게 소개되지 않았던 400여 점의 드로잉 및 주요 아카이빙, 전시에서 쉽게 접하기 어려웠던 대형 회화작품, 작가의 작업실을 재현한 공간으로 구성됩니다.
김종학(1937~)은 1979년 속초로 이주한 이후, 오랜 시간 자연을 마주하며 자신만의 회화 세계를 일구어 왔습니다. 설악산, 동해의 풍경 속에서 마주한 생명의 에너지와 변화무쌍한 자연의 질서를 화폭에 담아내며 자신만의 작품 세계를 구축하였습니다. 대담한 색채와 분방한 필치, 대상의 본질을 꿰뚫는 직관은 김종학 회화의 중요한 특징입니다.
전시는 크게 세 개의 장으로 이루어집니다. 제1전시실에서는 1957년 제작한 초기 누드 드로잉, 목판화 달력, 동경미술대학 연구소 재학 시절의 판화, 속초로 이주하기 이전의 작업, 1978~1979년 미국 체류기에 제작한 다양한 실험적 작업들을 소개합니다. 전시실을 가득 채운 종이 작업들은 약 70년에 이르는 작가의 긴 시간과 더불어, 김종학 예술 세계의 형성과 변화의 흐름을 압축적으로 보여줍니다.
제2전시실에서는 자연의 힘과 생성의 리듬을 다각도로 탐구한 작품을 보여줍니다. 대형 회화작품 〈Pandemonium_대혼돈〉을 통해 꽃과 자연의 에너지가 화면 안에서 폭발적으로 뒤섞이는 상태를 보여주며, 이를 비롯해 덩굴, 풍경 시리즈 작품은 자연이 품은 압도적인 에너지와 생명력을 강렬하게 드러냅니다.
제3전시실은 김종학의 속초 작업실을 재현한 공간입니다. 작업실의 복원뿐만 아니라, 작가의 시선과 습관, 사유와 창작의 방식이 응축된 장소를 다시 경험하게 하는 장입니다. 바닥을 뒤덮은 물감층, 자연에서 채집한 꽃과 풀, 벽면을 빼곡히 메운 그림들은 예술가의 삶과 작업이 분리되지 않는다는 사실을 생생하게 보여줍니다.
한 화가의 오랜 시간에 걸친 예술적 궤적을 입체적으로 살펴보고, 자연과 예술, 삶과 창작이 하나로 이어지는 감동이 새롭게 발견되기를 바랍니다. 이는 단순한 자연의 재현을 넘어 생명에 대한 깊은 감응, 존재의 환희를 드러냅니다. 더불어 재현된 작업실을 통해 작품 뒤편에 놓인 시간의 흔적까지 세밀하게 감각할 수 있기를 바랍니다.

《The Artist Kim Chong Hak》
Gangneung Museum of Art Sorol presents The Artist Kim Chong Hak, a special exhibition celebrating the artistic vision of Kim Chong Hak, whose singular visual language has profoundly shaped the course of Korean contemporary art. Bringing together approximately 400 works on paper—most of them previously unseen archival materials—alongside rarely exhibited large-scale paintings and a reconstruction of the artist's studio, the exhibition offers a comprehensive exploration of Kim's creative practice.
Since relocating to Sokcho in 1979, Kim Chong Hak (b. 1937) has cultivated a profound dialogue with nature that has become the foundation of his artistic practice. Amid the landscapes of Mount Seorak and the East Sea, he discovered the vitality and ever-changing rhythms of the natural world, transforming these experiences into a distinctive visual language. Radiant color, fearless brushwork, and an intuitive grasp of the essence of his subjects have become the defining hallmarks of his work.
The exhibition is organized into three thematic chapters.
Gallery 1 traces the evolution of Kim Chong Hak's artistic language through nearly seven decades of works on paper. Beginning with nude drawings from 1957, the presentation includes a woodblock-printed calendar, prints created during his studies at the Institute of Print Research at Tokyo University of the Arts, paintings produced before his move to Sokcho, and experimental works made during his stay in the United States between 1978 and 1979. Together, these rarely seen works illuminate the formative stages and continual transformation of the artist's practice.
Gallery 2 explores the vitality of nature and the rhythms of creation through some of Kim's most powerful paintings. At its center is the monumental Pandemonium, where flowers, vegetation, and elemental forces surge across the canvas in an extraordinary display of energy. Complementing this work are major paintings from the Vine and Landscape series, which reveal the overwhelming vitality, movement, and transformative power inherent in the natural world.
Gallery 3 presents a reconstruction of Kim Chong Hak's studio in Sokcho. More than a recreation of a physical workspace, it offers insight into the environment where the artist's vision, daily practice, and creative process converged. Layers of paint accumulated on the floor, wildflowers and grasses gathered from the surrounding landscape, and paintings densely covering the walls reveal a life in which art and living were inseparable.
Through this exhibition, visitors are invited to experience the breadth of one painter's lifelong artistic journey. Extending beyond the representation of its subject, Kim Chong Hak's work embodies a deep attunement to the vitality of existence itself. The reconstructed studio further offers an intimate encounter with the traces of time, labor, and lived experience that lie behind each work, providing a deeper understanding of the artist's enduring creative spirit.
