German New Objectivity photographer and sculptor Karl Blossfeldt uniquely revealed the sculptural beauty of plants by meticulously magnifying their parts. Through a restrained, archive-like presentation of botanical specimens, he offered a new perspective on the relationship between nature and artistic form. Alternative Forms of Floral Movement series was initiated in response to Blossfeldt’s delicate practice, reinterpreting the organic interaction between nature and humanity by integrating the social dimensions of flowers that, while still alluring and beautiful, hold little commercial value.
This work captures flowers displayed in shops yet left unchosen—those deemed less desirable in the marketplace. A water tank was placed atop a canvas, with speakers connected to an amplifier installed beneath it. Instead of artificial sounds, only sounds collected from nature were amplified, creating ripples across the water’s surface. These sound waves induced subtle movements in the floating flowers, reactivating a sense of depleted humanism and transforming the space.
During playback, the flowers’ movements were captured through long-exposure photography. In the resulting images, the presence of water—once transmitting the sound waves—vanishes, leaving behind only the ambiguous, uncertain forms of the flowers as they evolved in response to the ripples. Through these unpredictable visual outcomes, viewers are invited to project their own emotions and experiences, attempting diverse interpretations. This project explores alternative possibilities beyond conventional photographic techniques, experimenting with the expansiveness of photography as a medium and the inclusiveness of fine art.

The Alternative Forms of Floral Movement series was inspired by Blossfeldt’s delicate practice. It focuses on reconfiguring the organic interaction between nature and humanity in a contemporary manner by integrating flowers—still captivating and beautiful yet of little commercial value—into alternative forms of social connection.
In this work, flowers displayed in florists’ shops but left unchosen were collected and floated in a water tank placed atop a canvas. Beneath the canvas, speakers connected to an amplifier were installed. Instead of artificial voices, only sounds collected from nature were amplified to generate ripples across the water’s surface. These sound waves induced subtle movements in the floating flowers, reactivating a sense of depleted humanism and opening up the surrounding space.
During playback, the flowers’ movements were captured through long-exposure photography. In the resulting images, the presence of water—conveying the sound waves—disappears, while the flowers evolve into ambiguous, uncertain forms shaped solely by the rippling motion. Through these unpredictable visual outcomes, viewers are invited to project their own emotions and experiences, engaging in diverse interpretations.
This project departs from conventional expressive and technical approaches to photography, instead probing its alternative possibilities while experimenting with the medium’s expansiveness and the inclusiveness of fine art. Alternative Forms of Floral Movement II
