김리아갤러리는 2023년 11월 30일부터 2024년 1월 13일까지 황도유 작가의 개인전 <녹색광선 - 펑크락, 현대미술과의 유사성에 대하여>를 개최합니다. 이번 전시는 황도유 작가의 지난 10여년간의 표현주의 회화 시리즈인 <이상한 나라의 앨리스>에 이어 새롭게 선보이는 작품으로, 날카로운 형광색이 얼굴에 드리어진 소녀들의 포트레이트 시리즈로 구성됩니다.

황도유 작가는 프린트기의 노즐 불량으로 우연히 생성된 이미지에서 영감을 받아 그리게된 작은 포트레이트 작품에서 ‘Sex Pistols’의 1977년 싱글앨범 ‘God Save the Queen’을 떠올립니다. 작가는 엘리자베스 2세 여왕의 눈과 입을 가로지르는 두 줄을 굵게 그어 그 안에 글을 붙여 놓은 이 앨범 자켓의 이미지에서 현대미술과 펑크락이라는 음악장르의 미묘한 연결고리를 발견합니다. 펑크락은 1970년대 말에 시작된 장르로, 반항적이고 진취적인 성향을 가지며, 기존의 연주 및 가창 능력에 집중된 음악을 거부하고 정신적인 측면을 강조합니다. 미술 이론에 큰 영향을 미친 바실리 칸딘스키의 책 ‘예술에 있어서 정신적인 것에 대하여’에서 언급된 대로 현대 미술은 정신적인 경험을 표현하는 수단이며, 이는 펑크락의 음악 정신과 유사성을 가지고 있습니다.

이번 전시에 소개되는 <녹색광선>작품 속 소녀들은 객관적인 묘사가 절제된 상태로 펑크락 음악의 불협화음처럼 날카로운 색의 줄이 얼굴을 가로지로 있습니다. 형광색 줄들은 칸딘스키가 짙은 레몬색을 고음의 나팔 소리로 표현한 것처럼, 황도유 작가에게는 일종의 비명 소리로 소녀들의 긴장감있는 심리 상태를 드러내고 있습니다. 음악과 문학, 예술에서 소녀라는 주제는 자유로움과 순수함을 상징하는 동시에 성장하기 위해 겪는 과정에서 필연적으로 발생하는 연약함과 불안정함, 그리고 그것이 내포하는 변화와 창의성을 나타내기도 합니다.

황도유 작가의 <녹색광선>시리즈에 등장하는 소녀들은 펑크락 음악의 날카로운 음율처럼 저항의 눈빛과 도전적인 시각을 가지고 관람자를 맞이합니다. 펑크락이 관습에 도전하고 자신만의 표현 방법을 찾아가는 것을 강조하는 것처럼, 이번 시리즈 속 소녀들은 전통적인 아름다움에 도전해 자신의 목소리를 발견하고 자유로움을 추구하는 듯하게 느껴집니다. 그러한 소녀들의 얼굴에 드리어진 <녹색광선>은 소녀들의 심리 변화를 강력하게 표현하면서, 새로운 변화에 대한 상상력을 풍부하게 제시합니다.

'펑크락'이라는 음악장르가 있다. 대표적 밴드로 'Sex Pistols'을 들 수 있을 것이다. 그들은 '누구나 할 수 있다', '너 스스로 해라(DIY)'를 표방하고 베이스 연주를 못하는 베이시스트와 무대에 올랐다. 음악의 정신적인 측면을 주장하며 연주력, 가창력 등 기교 위주의 음악들을 부정한 행위였다. 미술가 '바실리 칸딘스키'의 '예술에 있어서 정신적인 것에 대하여', '마르셀 뒤샹'의 '샘'을 떠올리게 하고 있다. 그들을 '칸딘스키', '뒤샹'과 견줄 순 없겠지만, 그들의 음악은 현대미술의 정신과 연계되어 있다는 느낌이다.

우연히 'The Birthday Party'의 앨범 'Hee-Haw'을 구입했는데 재킷의 그림이 인상적이다. 옛 독일의 표현주의 풍인데 사슴으로 보이는 빨간 동물이 고꾸라질 듯 비틀거리며 걷는 모습으로 수록된 음악들과 잘 어울렸다. 그 음악들의 불협화음과 표현주의 미술이 뒤섞이는.... 내가 즐겨듣는 포스트 펑크와 그 영향권의 음악들은 표현주의 미술과 가깝다는 그런 생각을 했다.
펑크락과 현대미술을 연관선상에 놓은 비교는 쉽지 않지만, 펑크락의 등장배경, 변화과정은 현대미술과의 유사점도 있어 보인다. 현대미술의 기점을 눈에 보이는 대상의 객관 묘사를 포기한 시점으로 설정하고, 펑크락이 연주력과 가창력위주의 음악들을 부정하며 등장한 시점을 생각하면 그 유사성을 찾을 수 있겠다. 정형화된 표현 방식과 기교의 단련을 버리고 여러 감정이나 분위기를 표현하던 방식이, 점차 다양한 기법적 시도로 변화된 과정과도 유사할 것이다. 필연적으로 난해와 혼란을 야기했다는 점까지도.

펑크락과 현대미술의 유사점들을 녹색광선 연작과는 어떻게 연관지울 수 있을까? 연작을 시도하게 된 동기는, 프린트기의 노즐불량으로 출력물의 상단과, 인물의 입 부근에 두 줄의 분홍색 색줄이 가로질러져 인쇄된 것에서 착상되었다. 우연의 소산인 사진 한 장이 주는 시각적 효과로 인해, 이 두 줄의 색상을 강조해 형광 핑크 색줄을 그어 소녀의 작은 포트레이트 한 점을 그렸고, 문득 이런 이미지가 낯익어 오랜 시간 생각하게 되었다. 그 이미지는 'Sex Pistols'의 싱글 앨범 'God Save the Queen'의 재킷에 있는 '엘리자베스 2세 여왕의 눈과 입에 가로지르는 두 줄을 굵게 긋고 그 안에 글을 붙여놓은 것'과, 'Public Image Limited'의 'Death Disco' 뮤직 비디오에서 'John Lydon'의 얼굴에 두 줄의 검은 그림자가 가로질러 드리우는 모습이었다. 그것들은 내가 그린 포트레이트와 상당히 유사한 느낌을 주었다.

우연히 나타난 이 분홍색 색줄은 일종의 노이즈이고, 펑크락을 기점으로 발생한 하위 장르 음악들의 변칙적인 연주, 불협화음, 노이즈 등과 매우 유사해 보인다. 이 노이즈를 강조하기 위해 사용한 형광색의 줄들은 일종의 비명소리로 '칸딘스키'가 레몬색을 보는 놀라운 감각에 영향 받은 것이다. '짙은 레몬색을 오랫동안 보고 있으면 마치 고음의 나팔소리가 귀를 해치듯이 눈에 고통을 준다.'고 그가 말했듯이, 기묘하게도 그 레몬색 비명소리는 내 귀에까지 들리게 되었다.

Kimreeaa Gallery will host the solo exhibition "Green Ray - On the Similarity with Punk Rock and Contemporary Art" by artist Hwang Do You from November 30, 2023, to January 13, 2024. This exhibition presents a new body of work following the expressive figurative painting series "Alice in Wonderland" from the past decade. The new works are a portrait series of girls with vibrant fluorescent hues accentuating their faces.
Derived from an image accidentally generated due to a nozzle malfunction in a printer, the artist recalls the 1977 single album "God Save the Queen" by 'Sex Pistols.' The artist draws inspiration from the image on the album jacket, where thick lines intersect the eyes and mouth of Queen Elizabeth II, discovering a subtle connection between contemporary art and punk rock music. Punk rock, originating in the late 1970s, is characterized by its rebellious and progressive nature, rejecting conventional music skills to emphasize spirituality. This resonates with the emphasis on the spiritual aspect of artistic expression, as discussed in Wassily Kandinsky's book "Concerning the Spiritual in Art," which significantly influenced art theory.
The girls depicted in the "Green Ray" series are presented with restrained objectivity, akin to the dissonant notes of punk rock music, as sharp-colored lines cut across their faces. For the artist, these fluorescent lines act as a kind of scream, revealing the tense psychological states of the girls, akin to Kandinsky's representation of intense lemon color as the sound of a high trumpet. The girls in music, literature, and art symbolize freedom and purity while also representing vulnerability, instability, and the inevitable changes and creativity that come with growth.
The girls in Hwang Do You's "Green Ray" series, much like the sharp notes of punk rock music, confront the viewers with a gaze of resistance and challenging perspectives. Similar to punk rock challenging conventions and seeking its own expression, the girls in this series seem to challenge the traditional notion of beauty, discovering their voices and pursuing freedom. The "Green Ray" revealed on the faces of these girls powerfully expresses their psychological changes, suggesting a rich imagination for new transformations.
Hwang Do You's distinctive bold lines and ethereal colors resonate throughout this series, while the artworks also encapsulate a profound internal sound. We hope that you will thoroughly relish the diverse sensory journey offered by this exhibition. ■ KIMREEAA GALLERY

There exists a music genre called 'Punk Rock,' with 'Sex Pistols' being a prominent representative band. They advocated the principles of 'anyone can do it' and 'do it yourself(DIY),' showcasing a bassist who couldn't play bass yet took to the stage. Their act was a rejection of skill-oriented music, focusing on the spiritual aspect. This brings to mind the ideas presented by the artist Wassily Kandinsky in 'Concerning the Spiritual in Art' and Marcel Duchamp's 'Fountain.' While they may not be on par with 'Kandinsky' and 'Duchamp,' there seems to be a connection between their music and the spirit of contemporary art.
By chance, I purchased the album 'Hee-Haw' by 'The Birthday Party,' and the artwork on the jacket left a strong impression. The image, reminiscent of German expressionism, featured a red creature resembling a deer, appearing distorted and staggering as it walked, complementing the included music. The dissonance in the music and the fusion of expressionist art… Listening to my favorite post-punk and its associated music, I pondered the idea that it shares a certain affinity with expressionist art.
Drawing parallels between punk rock and contemporary art isn't straightforward, but considering the background and evolution of punk rock, there appear to be some similarities with contemporary art. If we consider the starting point of contemporary art as the moment when the objective depiction of visible subjects was abandoned and think about the emergence of punk rock rejecting skill-oriented music, there might be some similarities. The transition from standardized forms of expression and mastery of techniques to a method of expressing various emotions and moods could be comparable in both.
How can I relate the similarities between punk rock and contemporary art to 'The Green Ray' series? The motivation to attempt this series originated from a printer's nozzle defect that resulted in two pink lines crossing the top of the output and around the character's mouth. Inspired by the visual effect created by this accidental occurrence, I emphasized these two lines of color and drew fluorescent pink lines on a girl's small portrait, and suddenly this image lingered in my thoughts for a long time. This image was strangely reminiscent of the bold lines drawn over Queen Elizabeth II's eyes and mouth on the jacket of 'God Save the Queen,' the single album by 'Sex Pistols,' and the two bold black shadows crossing 'John Lydon's' face in the music video for 'Death Disco' by 'Public Image Limited.' They gave a feeling of similarity to the portraits I drew.
The accidental appearance of these pink lines is a kind of noise, and it appears remarkably similar to the unconventional play, dissonance, and noise found in sub-genres of music that emerged from punk rock. The fluorescent lines used to emphasize this noise are influenced by a sensation that is surprisingly similar to 'Kandinsky's' experience with lemon yellow. Just as he said, "If you stare at deep lemon yellow for a long time, it hurts your eyes like the high pitch of a trumpet damaging your ears." strangely enough, this lemon scream reaches my ears.
To me, the color lines drawn in "The Green Ray" series seem to echo as a single scream, revealing the girl's unstable psychological state. ■ HWANGDOYOU
