Boundary, From the Earth
가나아트는 '흙의 작가' 채성필(b. 1972)의 개인전, 《경계, 흙으로부터: Boundary, From the Earth》를 개최한다. 2003년 도불하여 현재까지 파리를 중심으로 활동 중인 채성필은 동양화의 전통 기법과 서양 미술의 조형어법을 접목하는 실험을 통해 일찍이 유럽 화단의 주목을 받았으며, 현재 뉴욕, 두바이 등 세계 주요 도시에서개인전을 개최하며 활동 영역을 넓히고 있다. 채성필은 인류 보편의 주제인 자연, 그중에서도 흙을 주요 소재로하는 작업으로 지리나 문화의 차이를 초월하려는 시도를 이어왔으며, 본 전시는 그의 주요작 60여 점을 선보이며 흙을 매개로 자연의 본질을 이야기하는 작업의 흐름을 조망하고자 한다. 학창 시절 고향과 어머니에 대한 향수를 담는 재료로서 흙을 다루기 시작한 채성필은 만물의 근본 물질을 설명하는 서양의 '4원소설'과 동양의 '오'행설'이 모두 흙을 포함한다는 점에 주목했고, 흙을 통해 본질을 탐구하는 방향으로 작업을 발전시켰다. 그는 주로 진주를 곱게 간 분)을 캔버스에 수차례 칠하고, 그 위에 진흙이나 먹 등을 정제해 만든 천연 안료를뿌린 뒤 흐르게 하는 방식으로 추상적인 화면을 완성한다. 이렇게 표현된 태고의 자연은 물을 은유한 청색 안료를 통해 다채롭게 변주된다. 흙과 물을 주제로 한 채성필의 작업은 다양한 문화권에서 공감을 얻고 있으며 작품성을 인정받아 세르누치박물관, 파리시청, 국립현대미술관, 서울시립미술관 등에 소장되어 있다.
Gana Art is pleased to present the solo exhibition of CHAE Sung-Pil (b. 1972), Boundary, From the Earth. Living and working in Paris since 2003, Chae has garnered particular attention from the European art scene with unique experiments combining traditional techniques of oriental painting and the formative language of Western art. Often referred to as "the Artist of the soil," Chae has worked on transcending the boundary of different regions and cultures by adopting nature, especially the soil, the universal subject of humanity, as the central theme and medium of his work, based on the fact that both the East and West regard the soil as the fundamental matter of the universe. To explore the origins and essence of nature, he usually uses natural objects in his works. His working routine starts with covering finely ground pearl powder on the canvas. He sprinkles or pours natural pigments made by refining clay and ink on it, leaving all the materials to flow and mix to make spontaneous traces. He variates this abstract painting through the blue pigment symbolizing water. Chae's works are in the collections of numerous institutions, including Musée Cernuschi, Hôtel de Ville de Paris, National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea, and Seoul
