Gallery Hyundai is pleased to present a solo exhibition of Sabine Moritz's Raging Moon. Moritz freely traverses between figurative and abstract paintings under the themes of easily-changeable and fragmentary memories – either individual or collective – as well as a “mental landscape” created based on Moritz’s own memory.

Moritz’s works are heavily centered around her own childhood spent in East Germany. She collects and deconstructs eclectic documentary images that refer to conflicts such as national ideology, identity and war, and re-constructs them onto canvas and paper. In addition, she experiments with different medium such as crayons and captures moments of intimacy and serenity found in her everyday life such as flowers or corners in her studio and surrounding environments. Since 2015, Moritz has been working on abstraction, boasting bold brushstrokes and dynamic colors that overwhelm the viewers, while continuing figurative works such as still life paintings.

An inaugural exhibition in Asia, this exhibition showcases about 60 paintings selected from a wide spectrum of Moritz’s oeuvres including figurative and abstract paintings and etchings.


갤러리현대는 독일 여성 화가 사빈 모리츠(Sabine Moritz, b. 1969)의 개인전 《Raging Moon》을 개최한다. 유럽의 주요 기관과 갤러리에서 잇따라 전시를 개최하며 국제적 인지도를 얻고 있는 사빈 모리츠는 개인과 집단의 가변적이고 파편적인 ‘기억’과 기억으로부터 형성된 ‘내면의 풍경’을 주제로 구상과 추상 회화를 자유롭게 오가며 창작 활동을 펼치고 있다.

사빈 모리츠는 동독에서 보낸 유년 시절의 자전적 경험과 추억을 바탕으로 국가적 이데올로기와 정체성, 전쟁과 같은 집단 갈등을 은유하는 다양한 다큐멘터리 이미지를 수집하고 이를 해체 및 재구성해 캔버스에 옮겨 그린다. 또한 꽃과 스튜디오의 코너 공간, 주변 풍경 등 자신을 둘러싼 환경이 간직한 친밀함과 고요함의 순간을 화폭에 담으며, 동시에 크레용과 같은 매체로 그리기 실험을 지속하고 있다. 2015년부터 과감한 붓질과 풍성한 색채가 관객을 압도하는 역동적인 추상화 작업을 구상화와 병행해 오고 있다.

아시아에서 최초로 개최되는 《Raging Moon》전에는 작가의 이러한 작업 세계 전반을 살펴볼 수 있는 구상 회화, 에칭 연작, 추상 회화 등 60여 점을 대거 공개한다.
