Press Release

ATELIER AKI is proud to present a solo exhibition 「Resizing」 by Kim Seungjoo from September 15th to October 22nd. 13 out of 15 works sold in her solo booth in Art Basel Hong Kong in 2015, Kim Seungjoo's works joined the collections of Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation, one of the eight collections of world contemporary art, and Belgian collector Galila Barzilai-Hollander, attracting international attention beyond the domestic art world. This exhibition is the first solo exhibition in three years since 2018, and showcasing approximately 20 new installations and painting works that can take an in-depth look at the artist's expanded world, from the streamlined installation work that Kim Seungjoo has shown so far to her first painting work.

The exhibition 「Resizing」 introduces Kim Seungjoo's painting works for the first time. Through the new work "Measuring," the artist builds a figurative space by featuring a ruler with a changed shape on the plane and expands the figurative language by capturing the characteristics of the medium differentiated from the installation work.

Furthermore, by considering the relationship between the viewer, space, and the installation works, various forms of "ruler" appear in a limited space, which is, the canvas screen, It implements an organic and dynamic image that overcomes the limitations of the canvas screen. Works expressed in colorful colors and bold screen composition will be an important opportunity for visitors to experience the artist's own world of work combined with expanded formative languages, and Kim Seungjoo's conceptual exploration through "ruler."

Kim Seungjoo starts with observing the "ruler" as an ordinary object and figuring out the meaning and symbolism contained in it. From the beginning, she has continued to work on mutating the properties and forms of the 'ruler'. The artist neutralizes the unique function of "measurement" of "ruler" by expanding the size of the scale, separating it by unit, or changing it into an organic form such as a straight line structure. The work created through these formative experiments provides the audience with an opportunity to immediately experience synesthesia, and by distorting the original functions and meanings, it becomes a tool for reflection on what human perception ability and absolute standards are.

Kim Seungjoo's "ruler”, the "unmeasurable ruler" without the existential value, is not based on absolute accuracy and firm normality, rather, on the contrary, the artist's conceptual interpretation of liquidity and abstraction. The ruler, known as the accurate scale and symbol of uniformity that does not allow an inch of error, is manipulated and enlarged by the artist, rejecting the existing uniformity and presenting the diversity of standards and changed perspectives towards the world. The artist states as follows. “A ruler exists in everyone's heart. As this ruler is freely transformed, we expect to experience a little change in many things that we believed we could not change. For example, you will feel in a way that the distance from others that is unlikely to be narrowed becomes a little closer, the weight of reality that seemed unbearable becomes lighter, and the distant future that is unlikely to be caught is getting closer.”
