패트릭과 그의 아내 강수희씨는 다큐멘터리 영화 ‘자연농’, ‘불안과 경쟁이 없는 이 곳에서’를 통해 지구에서 잘 사는 방법에 관해 고민하고, 그에 대한 대안적 움직임을 지속적으로 소개해왔다.
2019년 2월 9일에서 24일 까 지 연희동의 플레이스막 (placemak)에서 열리는 “Forest is the Artist”전시를 통해서 그들의 이야기를 발전시켰다.
2017년 10월 23일 패트릭과 그의 지인들 몇은 10개의 흰 캔버스를 들고 강원도 홍천에 위치한 곰실숲을 방문한다. 패트릭 작가가 건넨 캔버스에 위에 곰실숲은 아티스트로 분하여, 자신만의 창작을 실행한다. 1년간 깊은 숲 곳곳에 놓여져 있던 캔버스는 그 곳만의 4계절 변화를 담고 있다.
지구에서 살아가는 모든 생명들의 삶을 창조적인 활동으로 본다면 자연은 우리를 둘러싼 환경으로서 고정되고 대립되는 것이 아니라, 유동적인 상호의존적 관계를 통해 우리가 귀기울여야 할 존재가 되어 조화롭게 살아가는 방법을 알려줄 것이다. 인간이 자연의 식물과 동물을 기르면서 컬쳐( culture )란 말이 만들어졌다. 양식(樣式)이란 것 문화란 것이 쌓여갈 수록 우리는 그것들을 자연에서 빌려 왔었다는 것을 잊어가는 듯하다. 곰실숲이 그려낸 캔버스를 보면서 인류세 시대에 접어든 오늘날 인간에 의해 변화된 자연과 함께 하는 법을 생각해 보는 시간을 가졌으면 한다.

전시 기획자의 말

As our society becomes more aware of the ecological peril we find ourselves in, so too have we become aware of the need to build equitable relationships between ourselves, our industries, and the rest of the natural world. Within this awareness, the question of how we can better listen to nature is a critical one. 현대사회가 생태적 위기에 직면할수록, 자연계와의 균형이 더욱 절실하게 요구되고 있다. 이러한 상황 속에서 ‘어 떻게 해야 우리는 자연의 소리를 더 잘 들을 수 있을까?’는 매우 중요한 질문이 된다.

This exhibition is in part, an attempt to work directly with this idea of listening to nature in a medium we are familiar with, in this case, the forest expressing itself directly on a canvas displayed in an art gallery. In addition, it is an attempt to give credit directly where it is due.
이 전시는 부분적으로 ‘자연의 소리를 듣는다’는 기존 예술의 역할을 재현하려는 시도이다. 이 맥락에서 숲은 우리 에게 익숙한 매체, 다시 말해 ‘갤러리에 전시되는 캔버스’를 통해 그 자신을 표현한다. 또한 동시에, 숲에게 직접적 으로 예술가의 지위를 부여하려는 시도이기도 하다.

My job was primarily to take care of the things which are impractical for Gomsil Forest to accomplish alone, such as buying and transporting the canvas, preparing the artworks for hanging, and writing about the works. The creative content of the artworks themselves are from Gomsil Forest’s own artistic intention. In this, I am merely an assistant to Gomsil.
나의 역할은 캔버스를 구입해 그곳까지 운반하거나 전시를 위해 작품을 진열하고 글을 쓰는 등 주로 곰실숲이 홀로 할 수 없는 일을 맡아 처리하는 임무였다. 작품의 창의적 표현은 모두 곰실숲 자체의 예술적 창작의도를 통해 만들 어졌다. 이 과정에서 나는 그저 곰실숲의 조수일 뿐이었다.

Gomsil Forest herself is a small, early-career forest in Hongcheon province, a mountainous region in the northwest of the Republic of Korea, not far from where the Winter Olympics were held this past year. We first met in 2011, during a visit to interview local natural farmer, Seonghyun Choi for a documentary film we were making. Since that day, my wife and I have continued to make regular visits to Choi and Gomsil, to help with harvesting and rice planting in the valley, and sometimes just dropping by to say hello.
강원도 홍천군에 있는 곰실숲은 작고 어린 숲이다. 아내와 함께 웹진 취재차 자연농 농부 최성현씨를 찾아갔던 2011 년 겨울에 곰실숲을 처음 만났다. 첫 방문 이후로도 우리는 매년 농사일을 돕기 위해 정기적으로 홍천을 찾아갔고, 가끔은 숲의 안부가 궁금해서 그냥 찾아가보기도 했다.

Looking at the works in this gallery, which Gomsil produced over the course of a year, they are quite extraordinary. The use of texture, subtle color shifts, and patterns; they are a united body of work, yet each one says something completely different from that of the next. As the coordinator of this exhibition, my biggest hope is that we might each find something in the voice of Gomsil here, in these artworks.
이곳에 전시된, 곰실숲이 한 해 동안 작업해낸 작품들을 바라본다. 질감의 사용, 섬세한 색상변화, 다양한 패턴 등 모든 작품들이 서로 연결성을 띔과 동시에 각각의 개성을 드러내는 놀라운 작품들이다. 전시의 기획자로서 나의 가 장 큰 소망은, 우리 모두가 이곳 곰실숲의 작품에 담긴 목소리를 통해 서로에게 무언가 의미 있는 것을 발견했으면 하는 것이다.

After the exhibition, the profit from works sold will be delivered directly to Gomsil Forest, by way of spreading the money evenly on the forest floor.
전시가 끝나면 판매된 작품의 수익금은 곰실숲으로 전달되어 숲속 땅바닥에 고루 뿌려질 예정이다.
