Press Release

André Kertész (1984-1985), whose career spanned over seventy years across Budapest, Paris and New York, is today acknowledged as one of the most influential photographers of the 20th century. His images are sincere, faithful and profound, so much that each individual photograph seems to contain the tangible presence of the photographer.
Born in 1894 in Budapest, Kertész was fifteen years old when his father died and his uncle, Lipot Hoffman, took responsibility of André and his two brothers, Imre and Jenö. After graduating from the Academy of Commerce, Kertész began working at the stock exchange. In 1912, he purchased his first camera, and began photographing his daily life, often taking as subject his relatives, friends, and the Hungarian countryside.
Self-taught, Kertész remained faithful to his guiding principle: "what I feel, I do." Upon moving to Paris in 1925, he flirted with different movements such as Dadaism, Surrealism and Constructivism, but Kertész placed his point of view above everything else. Truthful to his own vision, Kertész underwent difficulties upon moving to New York in 1936. As he portrayed what he saw and what he felt, without sacrificing for the sake of customers or fashion, he could hardly get the support of commercial magazines and newspapers to earn a stable income. Kertész's bond with the visual world is so strong that each photograph contains a wealth of his feelings and emotions. Kertész is so undeniably present in each image, that these slices of life, of reality are at the same time a projection of the photographer.
This exhibition brings together 189 photographs taken throughout Kertész's life, and is presented in three periods: Hungary period (1912-1925), Paris period (1925-1936) and New York period (1936-1985). In 1984, a year before his death, Kertész, eager to preserve his life's work, donated to the French Ministry of Culture 100,000 negatives and 15,000 color transparencies, from which the photographs in this exhibition are printed.

This exhibition is organized by Jeu de Paume, Paris, in collaboration with la Médiathèque de l'architecture et du patrimoine, Ministère de la Culture et de la Communication - France and diChroma photography, and with the participation of Sungkok Art Museum, for its presentation in Seoul.
